Friday March 26

 Friday March 26

Happy Spring Break!  We wish all of our students and their families a peaceful and safe time off and look forward to seeing everyone back on Tuesday, April 6th!

Today, we worked on Daily 5 and got all of our book clubs caught up.  We also watched the movie Wonder in connection to our work on UR Strong - Friendology unit in health/Mindfulness.  Students were asked to record their thoughts, feelings, questions and connections in their visual journals.  This movie is all about respecting differences, positive and negative friendships, and working through friendship challenges.

We will be having an online workshop with both classes on April 6th in connection to the work we have been doing around global citizenship and human rights.  It is focused on "upstanders" who make a difference in our world.  We are appreciative of the Human Rights Museum in Winnipeg for providing this  for free during the pandemic.

We hope that some of you will take up the Peace Book Challenge that has been set for all EHS students!  Please see the Monday Connect for full details from Mrs. Kinsman!

There are some fun multiplication and division fact games on Google Classroom if your children need something to keep them busy!!

Thursday, April 8 will be Spring Picture Day. We will send a reminder on Monday April 5th!

 Highlights of the Day:

1. We finished our first persuasive writing letter- you can check out your child's letter on Flipgrid! They tried really hard to convince their recipient to do what they wanted! They were so clever!

2. We performed our STOMP group today! They worked so hard to come up with a number all together, and we presented most of them! You can check them out on Flipgrid

Your child is an expert, but in case they need help  to log in.

1. Use Chrome or app on iPad- go to flipgrid.com

2. In Enter Join Code: derksen123. You will see the class come up as Kindness 3/4 under Danica Derksen.

3. Your child will log in via Google using their educbe.ca log in info (same as google classroom log in).

4. They will then be able to respond to the questions and topics via video. They can play around with the editing with you at home!

5. You can see their response as well as their peers response for each topic.

Ask me: why do different actions create different sounds?

Check out their Flipgrids!

 Highlights of the day:

1. Both classes have been having some fun with Mrs. Coulson during music on Chrome Music Lab

2. We are working on the finishing products of our persuasive letter. We are working on a good copy on some special paper, and then we will record it on Flipgrid for you to watch with them!

3. We finished some of our Upstander research! Your students have been uncovering the action and impact their leaders have taken to change the world! It has been really inspiring watching your students connect to a cause they care about and think about how they can change the world!

Ask me: what inspires me about the Upstander I chose?

If they want to bring in a small item for their STOMP performance tomorrow, they can do so!

There is school on Friday. We will be going to the Coulee. Please dress appropriately and bring easy snacks.

There is a words their way test tomorrow!

We had a blur of a day today!

1. The climbing wall and Swedish Baseball was a hit again in gym! The rock wall is challenging and nice to use again!

2. We are creating our own STOMP routine, and today we choose our rhythm and beat. They can experiment with different sounds at home, and can bring in ONE item (non-instrument & small) that they would like to use for Thursday!

Ask me about: how can we make music with our bodies and other objects?

 Monday March 22

Celebrations

Today we said goodbye to one of our classmates who is moving to the lovely west coast.  We each had an opportunity to send him a positive intention which we sent with him in a class book.  We were very proud of what the students wrote in their messages and know that the book will mean a lot to our friend

Both grade 3 and 4 students worked on multiplication facts today.  We focused on showing arrays and reviewed the other ways we know to show a fact such as repeated addition, equal groups, number lines, skip counting, etc.

Mrs. Zwack's kids had the opportunity to use the climbing wall today in PE while Mr. Kelly's group played Swedish Baseball.  We will switch it up tomorrow.

Something to talk about

Which Change Maker are you researching?  Tell your parents 3 interesting facts about your person!

Reminders

This is a full week of school and we finish at noon on Friday.  We return from Spring Break on Tuesday April 6th.

Whiteboard Markers!!   Students are, for various reasons, running out of ink in their second whiteboard marker.  We have no more markers to provide, so please send a new one with your child (labeled please!) if theirs has run out.  We use them every day for math on small whiteboards.

We are planning a trip to the Coulee Friday morning.  Please dress for the weather.

 Happy weekend!

We had an awesome week with your kids and are looking forward to another before Spring Break!

Our highlights:

1. We continued working on multiplication which almost everyone was thankful for in Gratitude Circle! The 4s who did some multiplication online last year are really showing that they know their stuff. We are working on strategies to show multiplication like arrays, number sentences, groupings, and number lines.

2. We took an longer snack break and played a game by Right to Play called Protector Dodgeball! We had played it in class a few weeks ago, so then we took it outside to play in color groups!

3. Lots of us were able to do some research into our Upstander we choose to showcase in social. Later this weekend, we will upload to Google Classroom the planning page and some resources to use if they are wanting to do some work at home! We don't have many books, so if your child has books on the following people that they would be willing to bring in to share, that would be greatly appreciated.

Malala Yousafzai, David Suzuki, Rosa Parks, Viola Desmond, Greta Thunberg, Autumn Petlier, Martin Luther King Jr, Terry Fox, Barack Obama, Jeremy Gillie, Nellie McClung, John Ware, and Mary Jackson.

Ask me: what strategy do you prefer to use when multiplying?

We have a full week next week before March Break!

Words went home so please practice, the answer key is on Google Classroom!

Have a safe and fun weekend!

Thursday March 18

 Thursday March 18

Celebrations

1.  Both grade 3's and grade 4's started working on multiplication in math today!  Some were excited, some were nervous, and some were unsure of what this was all about!  We started gently by getting to know what the students knew and the grade 3s watched the video below.  We then worked on showing basic facts in a variety of ways.

Mr. Kelly and Mrs. Derksen Will be working with the grade 4's over the next few weeks and Mrs. Zwack will be working with the grade 3 students.  We are doing this because the learning objectives are quite different for grades 3 and 4.  We will put some information and games on Google classroom for home practise next week!

2.  In other exciting news today, we started our Hearing and Sound science inquiry with a cacophony of noise as we tried out various centres and recorded our observations.  Mrs. Derksen planned some exciting activities and the students loved trying them out.  Mrs. Zwack might need a quiet walk this evening to recover!!!!  Hands were sanitized!!

Something to talk about:  What were some of your observations during the Sound Stations today?

Reminders

1.  Words Their Way quizzes will be a week from today on March 25!  Sorting lists are in Google Classroom now.

Tuesday March 16

 Tuesday March 16

Today was full of learning challenges!  We love to stretch our brains and to think outside of the box!

Celebrations:

1.  In literacy, Mrs. Zwack's group got new words for Words Their Way.  Mr. Kelly's class will receive theirs tomorrow.  All correct sorts are available in Google classroom to remind students and assist parents.  You may notice a bump up in challenge level because we have reassessed every student and have seen amazing growth.  Those who need a bit more time with a particular pattern will get that opportunity until they are ready to move on.

2.  In math, Mrs. Derksen presented another tricky problem to solve.  She modelled how we might use a number line to solve the problem.  Then, students were given a similar problem to try on their own:

We used number lines in their math books and then also acted it out on a big number line on the floor!  This helped students see the movement forward and backward to reach the answer!

Challenge your parents to solve the problem!

3.  In PE we worked on gymnastics routines as we moved through the circuits in the gym.  We enjoyed moving our bodies through space in interesting ways!

Something to Talk About:  We started a new project today with Mrs Derksen!  Tell your parents about our Changemaker project and who you have chosen to research.

Reminders:

Tomorrow is Spirit Day - you can dress as an animal or dress in green for St. Patrick's Day!

Online Book Fair ends Thursday!
