Monday November 30

 Monday November 30

Highlights:

1.  During read aloud at the end of the day we read a recently self-published book by our own Katie W!  We enjoyed listening to the adventures of Magic Mice!

2.  Mrs Derksen taught our PE class today!  We had a lot of fun working on our shooting skills for basketball.

3.  We were excited to learn about taking jot notes as a research tool and everyone received a special notebook to collect specific facts about our coulee animal.

Something to try tonight:

We would love for students to practice using various sites for animal research.  Please have your child spend some time exploring these sites to see how they work and what information is available on each.  They can look up any animal they are curious about!  NO note taking is needed!  Have fun exploring!

 Highlight of the Day

  1. We edited our cinquains for the reader to understand our text better
  2. We drew some turtles using polygons!

Ms. Gooch and Mrs. Derksen introduced us to a project we will be working on over the next 2 weeks! We are doing a research project on an animal that lives in the Coulee. It will be individual but their table groups all have the same animal so they can help each other and stay COVID friendly!
We assigned the students some books on Epic Books for them to read about their animal for research! Your child just needs to read the books for their animal they are doing.

When they are researching, they are looking for: food, adaptations, habitat features, how the animal takes care of babies, animal class, and characteristics of the class.

 Monday Nov. 23, 2020

Thank you parents and students for participating in our Parent-Student-Teacher interview last week.  It was wonderful to meet with you and to share successes and to make plans for moving forward.  Thank you for your patience with the technology early on Thursday.

Celebrations

1.  Today we started a new read aloud book - Silverwing!  It is a wonderful and exciting book about a young bat named Shade who is the runt of his colony.  He will go on the adventure of a lifetime and will grow and change in many ways throughout the story.

Something to Talk About

Describe Shade to your parents.  What words could you use to describe what you know about him so far in the story?  What did you hear in the story so far that connects to our animal study in science?

2.  In math we worked on a challenging activity that made us think about basic facts in a new way.  We had to use our number sense and some tricky rectangular boxes to solve basic addition facts.

3.  In PE we had fun working on our basketball skills!

Reminders

If your child is in Grade 4 and would like to join the Peace Ambassadors this year, please respond to the email sent out last week by Thursday, November 26th.  We will begin Monday Nov. 30th at lunch.

Families Helping Families

As is our tradition at Eric Harvie School, again this year we are calling on your kindness and generosity to help support a family in need at Christmas.  This year, we will be supporting 10 families at Colonel Fred J. Scott School who may need a little extra help to make Christmas brighter.  While in past years we asked for specific gift donations for individual family members, due to the pandemic, this year will look different.

This year we are asking for monetary donations.  These donations will purchase a variety of gift cards (eg. Walmart, Superstore, Safeway) and small stocking stuffers gifted to each member of the 10 families in a stocking.  Parent Council has generously offered their support by collecting the money via direct deposit and helping purchase the gifts.

Donations can be made via at
