Monday, May 31

 Monday, May 31

We began our day with a class meeting outside in front of the school.  As we sat together in a circle, we noted the flags being flown at half mast and the orange ribbons that we made in September fluttered in the breeze.  We addressed the Residential School discovery in Kamloops with our students in an age appropriate and respectful manner.  We made connections to what they already knew about Orange Shirt Day and explained that there were children who did not return home.  We had a minute of silence in recognition of the loss of these dear children.

We discussed the feelings and emotions that we had when we come to Eric Harvie School.  The children used words like:  cared for, respected, happy, peaceful, and wanting to learn.  Sadly, this was not the experience the children at Residential schools had.  Children are invited to wear orange shirts this week as a sign of respect and recognition of the loss of the children and families impacted by their loss.  Please take some time this evening to check in with your kiddos.

In math today we continued our work on telling time and practiced using our clocks.  Mr. Kelly kept everyone on their toes with his creative storytelling involving "time"!

In Writing today we finished up our Character page and added a few setting details as well.  We started planning our realistic fiction stories.  We will focus on a familiar planning model and add in the idea of a problem and solution with three attempts to solve it by the end of the story.

We were very excited to practice our acting and view finding skills today as we investigated 3 types of shots that make a good movie.  We took turns being actors and movie makers as we zoomed in for closeups, stepped back for wide shots and we sure had fun!  We are preparing for a celebration of the books we have finished reading in our book clubs!

 Friday May 28

We had a little visit from Miss Hope today!  She brought smiles to our faces.

The grade 4 students have completed their part of the mural painting!  Next week the other 3/4 teams will add their parts as well.  We look forward to seeing it completed very soon!

In Math today we made our own analog clocks.  We learned a lot about how a clock is set up and why.  Then we practiced setting the hands to match the digital times that Mrs. Zwack challenged us with.

Thursday May 27

 Thursday May 27

 1.  If you did not have time to complete your online (Google Classroom) "time" activity last night, please complete it tonight as the results will be used for a graphing activity!

2.  The grade 4's started working on painting our mural project today.  Our class is the first of three groups to paint and we are working on the sky.  This is a very big undertaking and we are excited to see how it progresses as each group adds their part.  We have two more colour groups for our sky who will be painting tomorrow!

3.  We continue to work on telling time on both digital and analog clocks.  We encourage parents to make "time" connections with students at home as you see them naturally arise.

For example:

What time is it now?  You have 15 minutes to brush your teeth and get ready for bed.  What time should you be in bed?

Tonight's Review:

Students, use the clock at the link below and have your parents give you some times to show!

Tuesday May 25

 Tuesday May 25

We were all so happy to be together in class today!

Thank you to everyone who brought back their work in their green dustings.  If you did leave it, or any other assignments, at home please bring them in tomorrow.

In Math we introduced the idea of measuring "time".  Students recorded as many units and tools as they could think of before we watched a video that explained more about it.  As they watched, the students checked off things they knew that showed up in the video that were also on their whiteboards.  The video can be found in Google Classroom if students would like to view it again.

We encourage parents and students to talk about "time" and to find some natural ways to practice reading digital and analog clocks around the house.

We spent some time organizing our work from our green dustings and putting it in the right spots!  That was fun!! (maybe not so much!! ; )

See you tomorrow!

Wednesday May 19 - Online

 Wednesday May 19 - Online

We had a great day today!  We are nearing the end of our online learning and are ready to come back on Tuesday to see our students lovely faces (well at least their eyes!!).

It was officially announced at 2:30 today, that we are all back to in-person school on Tuesday!!

This is the best birthday present ever for Mrs. Zwack!!

We had a discussion about using other online platforms during learning time.  We all need to be good digital citizens and to make sure that our focus is on the lesson, participating in discussions, and completing the assignment.  Mr. Strand has let us know that there has been some side activities going on, by some students in the school, using tools such as Jamboard (connected to the Google Suite) without teacher or parent supervision.  Please chat with your children to ensure they are making good digital choices!

Mrs. Zwack's class had music with Mrs. Coulsen while Mr. Kelly's class had literacy time.  Thank you to Mrs. Coulsen for sending delicious ice cream cupcakes!

In math today we introduced measuring CAPACITY or the amount of liquid a container can hold.  There are more details and a video that we watched, located in Google Classroom.  There is no assignment at this time.  Please have some measuring instruments (mL and L) and a few empty containers (cup, bowl, empty bottle, etc.) for measuring practice tomorrow!

In Writing this afternoon, we talked about developing a character for our Realistic Fiction writing.

We shared our favourite characters and why we felt so connected to them.  The students really showed understanding of "connection" with a character and were able to provide some detailed reasons about their personal connection.  Our job as writers, is to create characters that the reader will want to get to know more about!

              Mrs. Zwack loved Ramona!

Mr Kelly loved the Hardy Boys!

There is no assignment right now for writing and we do not want students to begin filling in their Character Development sheet yet!

We want them to think about our discussion today and to "percolate" their ideas overnight!

We will give more direction and provide time to complete the sheet tomorrow morning.

They may certainly jot down some burning ideas on scrap paper if they wish.  We know we have some excited authors!!

Assignments due today:

Most Book Clubs have assignments due.  These responses should be in the student's Reader's Toolkits to bring back to school on Tuesday.

Upcoming Due Assignments:

GRIT poster due Friday

Music Projects

A few book club's work will be due Friday.

Thursday May 13 - Online

 Thursday May 13 - Online

This morning we enjoyed reading Chapter 3 of Owls in the Family.  How many of you felt badly for the baby owls? We all had a funny vision in our minds about how the owlet looked stuffed into the backpack!!  I wonder what challenges the boys will face trying to raise a wild bird as a pet?

During the rest of Literacy time, students were asked to work on:

-their book club assignments (if they have already met with Mrs. Zwack or Mr. Kelly this week).

-practicing Words Their Way

-reading to self - new books assigned in Epic about Engineering if you are interested or any book of your choice

Mr. Kelly and Mrs. Zwack met with two Book Clubs each this morning and those students have had work assigned due next week.

**If you have not had a Book Club Meeting yet you will do that tomorrow in Literacy!

Math

We are working on building a graphic organizer about Measurement.  Our task today was to set up our Linear Measurement box.  Then, we were asked to choose something interesting to measure.  At the bottom of the box we were to write a sentence or two about what we measured, what tool we used and how long or high it was.

Don't forget to add the units you used!  Then you can sketch in the space left over. For example Mr. Kelly could sketch his dog and a metre stick.

Grade 3's had an introduction to the literary device - hyperbole!  They discovered it meant an "exaggeration".

Grade 4's had French with Mr. Strand.

Inquiry - today we reviewed characteristics of materials that are used to make everyday items, using videos.  There are several of these videos in Google Classroom for review if needed.

Today's assignment was to complete their MATERIALS chart for Monday.  In each box, they should have examples they found and words to describe the material, just like we did for "plastic." We are looking for "engineering" type words such as:  transparent, opaque, absorbent, waterproof, flexible, rigid, etc.

Reminders

-keep working on Words Their Way

-if your reading video won't load onto Iris, do not panic!!  We are working on a solution.

-work on your GRIT assignment!  Details in Google Classroom.

-next week we have a PD day on Friday May 21.  We hope to be returning after the long weekend!

We MISS you all!!

Wednesday May 12 - Online

 Wednesday May 12 - Online

Today we started with a special presentation with Luna from our class and a special guest named Haze.  They talked to us about GRIT which is the ability to do hard things.  Luna shared her story as well as her G R I and T words that help her when she faces challenges.  Mrs. Zwack and Haze also shared theirs.   Please check Google Classroom today for the assignment related to this lesson.  All directions and resources are there for each child to create their own GRIT words and poster.  This may require some adult help to work through the game.  The poster is due in Iris for Friday May 21.

In math we continued our work on measurement and looked more closely at linear measurement and we introduced standard measurement units of millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres.

Here is a little video to watch that will help build your understanding!  *No assignment to be worked on.

In writing, we are trying to figure out the plan that Trudy Ludwig had as a writer for her book The Invisible Boy.  We reviewed the story and added to our Event Story Planner.  We were looking for what attempts Brian made to solve his problem of feeling left out.  We will be using the same planning format to create our own stories.

We completed the first three boxes together as seen here.  Students were then asked to watch the video again to determine two more attempts that Brian made and then add in the last box how the problem was solved at the end of the book.  This should be completed for this Friday.  Thank you!

During Science Inquiry, we shared some of the items we found around our homes that were made out of various materials.  We talked about why each material was a good one for the item.  For example, making a water bottle out of plastic is a good idea because it can hold water, is light, can be many colours ad can have a tight seal with the lid.  We filled in the section for "glass" together to show its qualities and examples.  Tomorrow afternoon, students will work on filling in the other parts of their web.
