1) Worked on our writing. We continued writing personal narratives and we shared them
Mrs. Zwack and Mr. Kelly were totally impressed! We used story poppers, smilie and strong verbs.
2) Both classes have started Words Their Way. It is an activity that is to be completed at home.
3) We continued our exploration of Our Global Village in our visual journals
4) We had a Peace Assembly. Oliver was very impressive on the piano!
Something to talk about:
Students show your parents what we did for Words Their Way. Don't forget to check it out in google classroom. There is an email concerning Words Their Way.
2) Grade fours had French class today with Mr. Strand (first time)
3) started to learn about our world as a global village
4) played paddleball today in gym
Something to explore:
We are moving into more challenging subtraction tasks, so we need to become confident with our basic facts. Check out our google classroom for practice activities.
Today we worked through the modelling of how we will begin to work with Words Their Way for this year. Due to Covid restrictions, we are not able to meet in our small spelling groups so we have had to design a modified program. Tomorrow we will be sending home an email with directions for you as parents to work with your child at home for 10 minutes each evening. Your child has practiced all of the steps and if you have any questions please contact us via email.
We worked on subtraction with regrouping again today and watched this video to get a visual representation of the process. We practiced doing questions together to ensure that we knew all of the steps! subtraction with regrouping video 4th grade
Something to Talk About
Today we started a KWL chart in our visual journals to list what we think we Know about Rocks and Minerals. and some wonders/questions we had and Wanted to Know. Share you thinking with your parents this evening!
Reminders
Fun Snack on Thursday
Report Cards accessible Friday in Power School. IPPs will be sent home Thursday.
We have been working very hard on addition with regrouping in math. Today we launched into greater independence for many students and gave some continued supported practice for others. Tomorrow we will begin to connect the strategies of using base ten drawings and stacking using the traditional algorithm to subtraction.
We are working on inferring in reading and we listened to the story The Stranger by Chris Van Alsburg to build our skills in this area. Inferring means reading "between the lines"looking for clues from the author and connecting to our own experiences to make sense of the text.
Something to Talk About
Today we talked with all of our students about what has been happening during play time at recess and lunch time outside. We understand that our kids are struggling with no close contact and with so much of our playground area being blocked off. Rather than playing the game that has been causing some challenges in terms of covid and unfriendliness, we discussed and brainstormed ideas for some new games and activities and will try them out beginning tomorrow. Thank you to all of the students for their excellent participation and helpful ideas!
Reminders
Please have your child go into Google Classroom to practice basic addition and subtraction facts using the online resources posted there. Next week we will send home an assessment to show you which facts they know and which specific facts need working on.
Today we began our investigation into Rocks and Minerals. We were observing like scientists as we examined (without touching!!) a variety of rock samples. We discussed the word CHARACTERISTICS and related it to the animal characteristics we had studied earlier in the year. Afters some close observations, we sketched and described a few rocks of our choice.
In math we reviewed adding three digit numbers with regrouping from the work we had done prior to winter break. We watched the video below for a demonstration and then worked with Mr. Kelly on strategies for successful addition on our own.
Something to talk about: Show your parents how you would solve one of the following addition equations using stacking.
45 + 38 = 382 + 547 = 5939 + 1068 =
Reminders
Please access the online math resources in the Google Classroom for extra practice of basic addition and subtraction facts!! We have been working on strategies in class and we are aiming for these to become automatic.
1) We started and completed our world maps. We used watercolours and they are beautiful!
2) We played a math game called: WAR
3) We completed an addition and subtraction survey. Students were challenged to complete -/+ basic facts. We are preparing for our next math unit, adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers.
Something to do:
We would like to encouraged all students to visit our basic fact games located in google classroom. Each student should spend about 15-20 minutes each day over the weekend. AThis will help build confidence and get the students thinking about mental mth strategies.
