Highlights
Zach shared photos of his new Golden Retriever puppy, Bruin, with the class. We are always excited to hear about new additions to the family !
In math we talked about what a Good Problem Solver looks and sounds like. These skills can help us with all types of problem solving!
Good Problem Solvers . . .
read the problem carefully.
start right away.
are not scared to accept a challenge.
never give up.
try many strategies.
collaborate and share ideas.
visualize the problem in their minds.
Then, we tried a really tricky math problem using math tiles to find multiple answers to a 3 digit plus three digit question that had to have a sum close to 1000. We had to apply our "good problem solver" skills!
We continued to work on our Rock Presentations this afternoon and will now take a small break as the teachers do a check-in to see how we are doing and what our next steps will be.
Mrs. Derksen read the book - No Excuses during mindfulness today. Talk to your parents about the message of the book. How does the message connect to what we learned about being Problem Solvers?
Reminders:
It is Spirit Day tomorrow! It is BACKWARDS DAY. We look forward to seeing what you come up with!
We will be doing a neighbourhood and close coulee walk on Friday to explore how rocks are used in our community! We will be away from the school between 9and 11:30 am.
Words Their Way quizzes will be on Monday March 8th for the words we sent home last week. We will be doing a reassessment of where each child is at overall later this week. This will allow us to see their growth and to place them in new groups based on what we see they are now able to do! Thank you for working with your children!
Math Facts - we have been asking students to practise their basic adding and subtracting facts over the past weeks. We are seeing great improvement on our check-ins in terms of accuracy and speed of recall. This will be very helpful as we explore application of adding and subtracting to real world problem solving.
If your child has mastered the adding and subtracting facts, feel free to do some spot practice rather than nightly review. At this point, we would ask that the others focus on the facts that are most tricky for your child.
