Last Day of School!!

Well we made it to the end of this most unique and challenging school year.  Mr. Kelly and I wish to thank you all, students and parents, for making this a great year despite all that we faced together.  We sure hope this is the end of hula hoops, endless sanitizing, and mask learning!  We have seen such growth in each of our students and we wish them all well wherever they may land next year.

We would also like to say a big thank you to Miss Moninah and Mrs. Martens for supporting our learners in so many ways this year.  We appreciate you and everything you did to keep things running smoothly and to help our students in so many ways!

Report Cards were not sent home in paper format this year, please access online. If you have any questions or concerns, please email or call us at the school.

Thank you for the many gifts and kind words that we received over the past few days.  It has truly been a pleasure to teach your children this year.

We had a very busy day today and did miss sharing Emily's story that she has self published and wanted to  read to the class.  You can click the link below to hear a read-aloud of her story.

Happy Summer Holidays!  Be kind and stay safe!

Love,

Mr. Kelly nd Mrs. Zwack

 Wednesday June 23

Today, in recognition of Indigenous Awareness Week, we read a book called The Sharing Circle by Theresa Larsen-Jonasson.  She is a Cree - Danish Metis Elder who comes from around Red Deer Alberta.   This book focused on the importance of the circle to Indigenous people and how there are many circles or cycles found in nature.  The animals in this story had a disagreement and they came together with an Elder and the other creatures to solve the problem in a "Sharing Circle".  Students, please explain what you learned from the story to your parents.  Here are some images from the book to guide you.

In PE today we played some super fun frisbee golf!  It was our last official PE class of the year.  We would like to thank Mr. Der for all of his hard work over the last 5 years as our PE teacher.  He made sure we learned a lot about sportsmanship, perseverance, GRIT and the importance of living a healthy and active lifestyle!  We will miss you next year Mr. Der.  Good Luck in your new job!

REMINDERS

Please bring an extra bag on both Friday and Monday as we will be sending student books, papers, etc. home each of those days.

Today we had a great day and it was very energetic as the grade 4's had their celebration at lunch.  We appreciate our parent council who provided food, treats, personalized autograph books, and special pens to make the even fun for our students.  We will really miss our grade 4's next year but wish them a wonderful transition to grade 5 wherever they may go.

As a part of our work this week focusing on Indigenous awareness, we read the book Nokum is my Teacher.  It was very interesting to see both English text and Cree text on the page.

Grade 4 Parents - please look for an email with some questions to discuss with your child this evening to follow up on our health lesson today.

 Monday June 21

Today is Indigenous Awareness Day that starts off a week of focus on building understanding and recognition of Canada's Indigenous People and to celebrate and acknowledge their contributions.

On Monday, June 21 the Literacy Team and the Indigenous Education Team will co-host a system-wide Read Aloud Event in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day. We are privileged to have Iikiinayookaa, principal of Piitoayis Family School, and Chief Superintendent Usih to come together to celebrate with the reading of a book written by Iikiinayookaa, titled, Omahkitapiksi Okakinikiiwa : Teaching from our Elders.

We discussed the lessons and messages that we learned through the sharing of this book and worked on a page in our visual journals.

Thank you to Marlene Yellow Horn for sharing her story with us and for helping us to connect to her Blackfoot culture.

Reminders:

Tomorrow is a special lunch for our grade 4 students to acknowledge their moving to TMC or other places for grade 5.  Mr. Kelly will be taking photos.  Lunch provided for those who responded to the email.

Sports Day for Grade 3/4 is on Thursday morning this week.

Coulee walk Friday morning.

Parents of grade 4 students - we have had our introductory lesson for the H.S. part of the health curriculum.  Please check in with your child to see what they learned and to answer any questions.  We will follow up with their Question Box questions tomorrow as well.

                                    KINDNESS PEACE AMBASSADORS AT WORK!

Whoo!  Mr. Kelly and Mrs. Zwack tried hard to keep up with the kids today but we were no match for their energy!!  It was a fun day and we managed to learn some new things despite the extra high spirits.

We have continued to work on Friendology 101 and today we learned about Friendship Fires.  Students are encouraged to explain the images below to their parents to show what they learned!

We were all excited to share our second version of the straw bridge challenge this afternoon and we saw some real improvements in design, strength and stability!  We have one more group to test tomorrow!

CAN YOU GUESS WHICH ONE HELD THE MOST WEIGHT?

REMINDERS - All grade 4 students need to bring back their Health permission forms by tomorrow as we will begin the program Monday.

Wednesday June 16

We had a great day today and we appreciate everyone working together so well in these last days of the school year.

In math we have been working on area and perimeter as a part of measurement.  We worked on our whiteboards to create arrays and how to find more efficient ways (multiplication) to find the area other than counting each square.  We even talked about the idea of a "formula" (like the big kids learn at TMC!!!) to figure out the area of a rectangle.  A = L x W

We have been talking some more about friendships and how to make a new friend and how to keep the friends we have.  We watched a few great videos and then created our personal guide to making a new friend.

Reminders:

1.  Grade 4 students - please return Health permission forms by Friday.

2.  The deadline for talent show submissions has been extended to Friday. Please submit your video to the link that follows.  If it doesn’t work to click you may have to copy and paste it into the search bar.  Please keep your videos to under a minute.
